The Devotee & Paint
When we found these devotee door handles, we knew we wanted to keep the intervention minimal because the original cast details were already so intricate.
Cast in bell metal using Bastar's traditional Dhokra technique, the pair reflects a centuries-old lost-wax metal casting tradition where every detail is first shaped in clay and beeswax before being cast by hand.
For this piece, we built on the jewellery that was already part of the figure, adding small touches of red and yellow to her earrings, necklace and bangles.
We were drawn to the rhythm of these details across the sculpture. The colours bring emphasis to the ornaments without competing with the cast surface, echoing shades that have long appeared in Indian adornment while preserving the figure's original character.
